The club was founded in 1899 and began play in the First Rate Junior Association, but was promoted to the WAFL after eight games to replace the Rovers Football Club after they dropped out of the league and folded, with Perth drawing much of its inaugural WAFL squad from Rovers. Perth won its first premiership in 1907, but did not win their second until 1955.

Location
Lathlain is an inner south eastern suburb of Perth, located 6 km from the Perth CBD. It is named after Sir William Lathlain, the Lord Mayor of Perth from 1918 to 1923.
