Launceston is a city in the north of Tasmania, at the confluence of the North Esk and South Esk rivers where they become the Tamar River. Located 200 km north of Hobart, Launceston is the second most populous city in Tasmania and the 18th largest city in Australia. It was named after the town of Launceston in Cornwall, England.
