The formation of the competition was originally thought to be in 1908. However, the first games were played in 1903 between North and Currie football clubs. The King Island Football Association (KIFA) was formed in 1914 with the introduction of the third team, the Pegarah Rovers.
The competition peaked at 4 teams in the 1950s with the introduction of the Grassy Hawks and Mount Stanley Tigers football clubs. In the interim Pegarah Rovers had folded, Pegarah and Loorana Magpies fielded teams but disbanded by 1938.
One of Australia’s most isolated, and almost certainly its smallest football league, the 3 teams play 10 games each in a 15 round competition plus finals.

King Island is located in the Roaring Forties of Bass Strait, off the north-western tip of the main island of Tasmania, about half-way between Tasmania and Victoria. Currie, the largest town and administrative centre, is situated on the west coast of the island. King Island was named after Captain Philip Gidley King, the third Governor of New South Wales.
