The Gladstone Australian Football Club was founded in 1972 as the Gladstone Mudcrabs. While the Gladstone Mudcrabs had a long, proud and sometimes checkered history, at the end of 2018 the members, by majority vote, decided to take the club in a new exciting direction, rebranding as the Gladstone SUNS. Since our area is located within the Gold Coast Suns catchment zone, whose staff work in the area with development opportunities, Auskick programs and in-school programs, and because we have the best weather in Australia…the Gladstone SUNS was a perfect fit.
This ‘line in the sand’ moment was a conscious and deliberate decision to wipe the slate clean, leaving the past in the past and to begin a bold, determined, respectful and family-friendly new chapter, with a host of enthusiastic players, supporters and importantly sponsors. The club is determined to always pay our respects and never forget our Mudcrab history, celebrating the successes on the field, the effort and commitment of our life members and the long list of past players that donned the green and white, by playing a ‘heritage’ game each year in full Mudcrab colours.
