Broken Hill is an isolated mining city in the far west of outback NSW. The world’s largest mining company, BHP Billiton, has roots in the town. Broken Hill is located near the border with SA on the crossing of the Barrier Highway (A32) and the Silver City Highway (B79), in the Barrier Range. It is 315 m above sea level, with a hot desert climate. The closest major city is Adelaide, which is more than 500 km to the southwest. Unlike the rest of NSW, Broken Hill observes Australian Central Standard Time, the same time zone used in SA and the NT.
