The Gungahlin Football Club was established in 1981 and entered the Monaro division 2 competition in 1982. The club made history by winning the MAFL division 2 premiership in their first season.

The District of Gungahlin is one of the original 18 districts of the ACT. Gungahlin is an Aboriginal word meaning ‘little rocky hill’. Gungahlin is the name for the entire district, and also the town centre, but it is also the name of the suburb which Gungahlin Town Centre is in.
