About
The Sharks were formed in 1977 by a group of students as the Warrnambool Institute Football Club to provide students with a recreational outlet and providing a ‘non-academic’ view of the institute. The ‘Sharks’ moniker was adopted as a truncation of the university’s surrounds known as Sherwood Park (and to strike fear into the opposition!). However, the infamous ‘Shark Shuffle’ was not conceived until 1983. The name Deakin University Football Netball Club was officially adopted in 1990.

Although success has been limited, fun and friendship has always been in abundance. The Sharks have provided a social and sporting outlet for 1500 plus footballers and netballers.

In 2008, the Sharks entered into an alliance with the Mortlake community. The effect was twofold, it re-established junior football and netball back into the town of Mortlake (which had ceased when Mortlake left the Hampden League) and it provided the senior club with the continuity provided by families and constant support. Three junior football and three junior netball teams were formed and training and home games can be played in Mortlake, with the ‘shark shuffle’ performed regularly within schools in the town. In 2013 the juniors were officially recognised as the Mortlake Junior Sharks by the league and media outlets. This provides Mortlake junior footballers and netballers with a team they can clearly identify as their own.
