The competition was formed in 1893 as the Ballarat Football Association.
It was renamed the Ballarat Football League in 1908 and was briefly known as the Ballarat-Wimmera Football League between 1934 and 1936.
It is now known as the Ballarat Football Netball League (BNFL) and consists of 11 football/netball clubs and 9 junior football/netball clubs.
